Summer Break '09
Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 11:30AM
So I have just come back from working at Summer Break, which is why I have not made a post in a while, Cornwall is not great for internet or phone reception.
The two weeks were sick; sun, sea, crazy students and even crazier reps! On the way I met some awesome new people and socialised in ways that that is hard to when at uni. I met some awesome DJs too that I learned a lot from. So I thought I would try and come up with a musical journey to try and capture the 'sound of summer break.'
First up I got to give respect the most integral DJ there, Cuddles. Everyday he was on the beach banging out tunes, Van Halen to Prince, then in the clubs each night he'd whip Drop The Lime and AC Slater as if to say; 'What were you expecting?! Don't worry children, Daddy's Gotcha!'
He has given me his latest mix which I think taught me a few lessons about being a DJ and playing music at parties. Being in this blogging bubble it is easy to lose one's head and forget the final objective of what we're doing. Yeah it's nice to feel cool and hip, with the latest genres and popular producers, but isn't the best type of party one where you can just hang loose and have fun, just good times! And that is what I think this mix aims to achieve, it's not all about sub-genres of dubstep and electro so heavy you can't hear the difference between synth and snare, its about mixing C&C Music Factory into 'raspberry beret!' (and still it gets better after that)
Please check out & download the mix (tracklist in the comments section)
Next my respect goes to Mr. James Mearns, who, when he could spare a brief moment away from sharking, was a pretty decent DJ. I'm hoping to get a mix from him in the next few months but for the meantime here is one of his fav tracks, a little more teckkie (he's pretty much the youngest DJ I know that plays Deep House (lets not joke I'm pretty sure he's the ONLY one I know but that's beside the point)) but still cool, check it out:
Alex Font, Aboga - Excuse Me (Timo Becker & Patric La Funk Remix)

And finally we were graced with the Urban Knights for much of the two weeks. I've seen these boys perform a few times now so was pretty star-struck to meet them! They were the first DJs I ever heard play Cockney Thug and my god, it changed my life. Again these guys showed great versatility on the beach and in the club (and till the early hours in my caravan) (DJing that is). Seriously these guys are the shit and along with their VJing skills are awesome to watch, fingers crossed for a MUDLOVE appearance soon! For now I've given you a tune they played that went down seriously well at the beach party @ 4pm, have a listen and you can imagine how bumpin' it was!
Skepta - Too Many Man (Zinc Remix) *myspace rip*
And finally I got to have a little go at DJing on the beach which was pretty cool, hadn't played to nearly that many people before, too bad everyone was a little hungover, I'm not sure if my tunes helped the headaches. But here is my fav tune at the moment!
Dre Skull feat. Sizzla - Gone Too Far (Lee Mortimer Remix)
Hope you all like this stuff, more 'in-depth' music coming your way soon, been a bit out of the loop!
Check out a few more of the photos...
